Autumn eye
A contemporary mixed media painting by Dwayne Satterfield
Dwayne Satterfield's captivating artwork features a vibrant, celestial eye reminiscent of the Cat’s Eye Nebula. Using a mix of acrylics, watercolors, and oil paints, he employs a plastic picnic knife to create dynamic textures and radiant colors that evoke the beauty and mystery of the cosmos. The interplay of deep blues and luminous oranges creates a striking visual effect, making this piece both visually and emotionally engaging. The texture, heavily emphasized through the unconventional use of a plastic knife, adds depth and complexity, drawing viewers into the swirling, radiant patterns that seem to pulse with energy.
The artist’s innovative approach challenges traditional techniques, reflecting his resourcefulness and creativity, especially given his circumstances. Satterfield, an incarcerated artist, transforms limited resources into a powerful visual statement. His choice of tools and layered painting method not only showcase his skill but also invite viewers to think about the creative process in new ways. This piece stands as a testament to the expressive power of art, offering a glimpse into the artist's vision and his ability to capture the awe-inspiring phenomena of the universe.
What Dwayne said of the piece: "This is part of a series, starting with “Celestial Eye”, which was based on the beauty I saw when looking at the Cat’s Eye Nebula. I created this in the same way, using non-traditional tools and methods. My implement of choice: a plastic picnic knife. The underpainting is a mix of acrylics and watercolors I’d created for another project. Afterwards, I went at it again with the plastic utensil and, when satisfied, I used oil paint and created the final design you see here."
Many of Dwayne’s other pieces are available on Displate, Redbubble, and TeePublic.
