lanterns
A contemporary mixed media art by Mike Lauderdale
“Lanterns” depicts a mesmerizing scene of numerous lanterns floating into a dark night sky. The artwork is a combination of paint and pencil, creating a vibrant and dynamic display of light against the deep black background. The lanterns, rendered in warm hues of orange and yellow, appear to glow with an inner light, illuminating the surrounding area.
The crowd below is shown in silhouettes, adding to the contrast between the bright lanterns and the dark night. The artist has used a variety of textures to give depth and dimension to the piece. The backing, made from food containers, adds an interesting and unique element to the artwork, creating subtle patterns and textures that enhance the overall visual effect.
The piece captures the awe-inspiring beauty and communal spirit of a lantern festival, inspired by a National Geographic scene. The multitude of lanterns, varying in size and brightness, gives a sense of movement and endless possibilities as they ascend into the sky. The combination of media used by Mike Lauderdale brings a rich and layered quality to the work, making it a captivating and thought-provoking piece.
What Mike said of the piece : “Lanterns was a personal challenge for me. I'm not very good at capturing light as I have a bad habit of overworking a piece the moment I achieve it. I've difficulty leaving well enough alone. I saw this image somewhere and thought I'd give light another try. I'm glad I did because it proves I CAN do light. At least a little.”
