post-flight
An abstract piece by Mike Lauderdale
"Post-Flight" is a dynamic and evocative abstract painting characterized by its vibrant interplay of colors and textures. The piece captures the essence of movement and energy, suggesting a scene of aftermath or transformation. Swirls of green, blue, and orange blend seamlessly, creating a sense of fluidity and motion, reminiscent of natural elements like wind or water in a turbulent state.
Mike employed broad, sweeping brushstrokes that convey a feeling of rapid, almost chaotic motion, while the sporadic splatters of white and blue add a layer of spontaneity and unpredictability. These splashes contrast sharply with the more structured, layered areas of color, highlighting the tension between order and chaos within the composition.
At the heart of "Post-Flight," there is a subtle, almost hidden depth, inviting viewers to look closer and discover the nuanced details beneath the surface. The varying textures, from smooth gradients to rough, scratched surfaces, contribute to a rich, tactile quality that enhances the visual experience. This complexity mirrors the multifaceted nature of the theme, possibly alluding to the intricate aftermath of a significant event or journey.
Overall, "Post-Flight" is a powerful visual narrative that encourages contemplation and interpretation. Its abstract nature allows for personal connections and meanings to emerge, making it a compelling piece for viewers to engage with repeatedly, finding new elements and insights with each viewing.
This piece was created using acrylic and oil paint on up-cycled packaging, including several cracker containers, as well as some discarded fabric paint, and backed with cardboard for stability during shipping. The visible lines where the different package container types meet add to the overall texture, showcasing the artist's dedication to upcycling in his art.
What Mike said of the piece : “"This is my second effort to recreate the motion discovered in 'Flight' and a little more successful. Here I aimed to see if I could capture the frenetic elation that bubbles up inside me every time I've flown. There's something rewarding upon landing, like a carnival ride well received. As I worked towards the end of the piece, it began to feel like a water landing, which I've never experienced. I have an overactive imagination though and was sure the mist I was feeling on my face was paint.”
