Saturday Morning

A happy accident piece

This vibrant and textured artwork, titled "Saturday Morning," is an intriguing composition by Mike Lauderdale. Crafted using acrylic paint over up-cycled layers of cardboard, the piece incorporates leaves made from card stock, creating a multi-dimensional effect.

The painting features a striking green and yellow background, with a cluster of leaves arranged in a dynamic pattern. These leaves, textured with delicate flowers from a birthday card, add a natural and organic element to the piece. Scattered yellow dabs throughout the background bring additional color and joy to the artwork.

A notable aspect of this piece is the small, blue-colored, smooth patch at the bottom right. This feature resulted from a happy accident, and as most artists know, these are the things we must embrace.  A unique texture difference emerged, adding depth and interest to the painting.  The combination of these materials and techniques results in a rich, textured artwork that is both visually striking and environmentally conscious.

What Mike had to say about the piece:  "This piece was an experiment to see how well certain up-cycled materials would work as a base for a painting. I love making use of what would otherwise end up in a landfill to create something new. The small, blue-colored, smooth patch was a happy accident. I glued a piece of smooth cardboard, wrong side up, which happened to have writing on it. I layered the paint several times to cover up the lettering and wound up with an extremely cool texture difference. The yellow dabs are meant to add color and joy to the piece, as are the leaves, which are textured with delicate flowers and were part of a birthday card from long ago."
