storm lion

An abstract piece by Mike Lauderdale

"Storm Lion" is an abstract piece, it features a rich, textured surface with a warm, earthy palette dominated by shades of brown, ochre, and hints of red. The textures and brushstrokes create a dynamic and somewhat turbulent effect, reminiscent of stormy weather or a rugged landscape.

Within this composition, there are subtle areas of cooler colors, such as muted blues and purples, which add depth and contrast to the otherwise warm tones. The blending and overlapping of these colors give the piece a sense of movement and complexity, inviting the viewer to interpret the forms and patterns in various ways.

The overall impression is one of raw energy and natural forces at play, possibly evoking the powerful presence of a storm or the majestic strength of a lion. The abstract nature of the artwork allows for multiple interpretations, making it a captivating piece that engages the imagination and emotions of the viewer.

Primarily created with oil paint on Bristol board and painted on upcycled cardboard. Measuring approximately A3 in size, this artwork by Mike showcases his dedication to sustainability by transforming discarded materials such as empty food containers and boxes into stunning visual art. As an incarcerated artist, Mike chooses to use recycled materials, taking pride in upcycling them into something beautiful.

What Mike said of the piece :
“Originally, this was intended to be a backdrop for one of my more complicated abstracts. It was meant to convey serenity and calm, growing despite the constant of surrounding chaos, and I was going to layer collage work over the top of it. The truth is, I’ve never known when to leave well enough alone. If left to my own devices, this would likely have ended up somewhere very different. Thankfully, Squirrel was able to convince me that it had legs and was not only finished but inspirational. I was thrilled with the piece, and it has spawned several collaborative pieces in the Shroom Squirrel Originals collection.”
